FAQ

Common Questions

Store Policies

Do you offer financing?

Yes. For those with good credit we offer 6 months Same As Cash financing through Synchrony, usually for credit scores around 700 and up. We also offer 90 days Same As Cash for lower credit scores through SNAP, with a very high approval rate.

Do you do layaway?

Yes. We typically require 20% down, and the item should be picked up within 90 days. If an item is not picked up within 90 days, any balance paid can be applied as in-store credit.

Where do you ship? Do you ship internationally?

We only ship within the continental U.S., including Alaska.

How do you handle returns?

You have 15 days from the day you receive the item to request a return. Simply contact us by email at Sales@AmericanJewelryInc.com or call us at 865-453-3294 from 10am to 5pm EST, Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday). We'll email you a free return label for USPS Priority or Priority Express, depending on the package value.

Is shipping free?

Any order of $500 or more ships free through USPS Priority Express. On orders under $500, shipping is $13 for 2-3 day delivery or $30 for 1-2 day delivery. This includes insurance.

Are shipments and returns insured?

Yes. From the time USPS takes control of the package (scans it) until it reaches its destination, shipments and returns are insured.

Do I need an appointment to shop or sell in your showroom?

No. You can come anytime during business hours, from 10am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday).

Do you provide fine jewelry cleaning and check-ups?

Yes, at no cost, whether the piece came from us or not.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Honesty and service to our customers are what made us the dominant fine jewelry store in the Smokies for over 45 years. We are committed to providing high-quality jewelry made to last, and we inspect each piece to the best of our ability to ensure you receive a quality piece free from defects. We are all human, so if any issue arises from manufacturing or stone setting on our part, we promptly take action to correct it. Simply contact us by email or phone for instructions.

What we don't cover is loss or obvious damage, such as a ring getting caught in a door jamb. In those cases, we'll work with you to get it taken care of at a fraction of what the average store charges for similar repairs.

For normal wear and tear over many years, we strongly recommend having your jewelry cleaned and inspected by us or another independent jeweler every year, or every two years at minimum. We clean and inspect free for life, and most independently owned stores will do the same. We don't recommend the big chain stores for this service, as they're trained to sell you on unnecessary and costly repairs. In most cases we simply take care of it for at least the first two years, as long as damage is not obvious. We're known for taking care of problems even decades after the sale. Our customers are like family.

Diamonds & Gemstones

Are your diamonds natural or lab grown?

We specialize in natural diamonds. For the budget conscious, we can do anything in lab grown diamond for a fraction of the cost of natural. And when it comes to lab grown versus lab grown, we're considerably less than the big chains and online companies.

What's the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?

The simplest answer is that natural diamonds are mined from the earth while lab grown diamonds are grown in a lab. In every other way they are the same, with the same hardness, brilliance, and properties. Lab grown diamonds are the first alternative to natural diamonds that a jeweler cannot tell apart with 100% accuracy without very expensive equipment or lab testing. With simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite, any good jeweler can tell the difference easily.

About 98% of lab grown diamonds have a serial number laser inscribed on the girdle, or edge, of the diamond, which can only be seen under high magnification. As long as the manufacturers follow the rules, we can look for that serial number. Some unscrupulous cutters will remove it for a fee, which accounts for the other 2% with no serial number. Without it, the only 100% accurate way to detect lab versus natural is lab grade testing equipment.

Do you sell loose diamonds or gemstones?

Yes, we have thousands in stock. If we don't have what you're looking for, we can typically get it very quickly.

Can I buy the setting without the center diamond or gemstone?

Usually yes, though it can depend on the item. You can also buy the center diamond or gemstone without the mounting in most cases. Simply contact us with any questions like this.

Repairs & Custom Work

Do you do jewelry repair?

Yes, we do all types of jewelry repair and have access to state-of-the-art laser and microscope diamond setting for all those tiny diamond accents that have been so popular the last 20 years. Most jewelers have a very difficult time setting a diamond only .5mm around, which is hard to see, much less set.

Do you do your work on-site or send it off?

We do 95% in-house, and most times our customers can have their repairs finished in 1-3 days. In the rare case a job is more complex than we can handle, we make sure you know we'll be sending it out.

Do you do custom design?

Yes. We use state-of-the-art CAD (computer aided design) and typically have full 3D renderings ready within 2-3 days. Historically, custom designed jewelry was very expensive. Now we can make a custom piece and still beat the big chain stores' price on the same or a similar piece. For instance, if you saw a Neil Lane design at Kay Jewelers and wanted the same ring, we can make it in better quality for a lower price.

Buying, Trade-Ins & Selling

Do you buy jewelry?

Sometimes, yes. Over half of the time people ask, they're selling a pre-owned wedding ring, which is a difficult one to answer. Not many brides want to wear someone else's ring from a failed marriage, so all jewelry stores have to buy bridal low enough that we can afford to make something else out of it. With gold prices over $5,000 per ounce, that cost can be enormous. Ultimately it depends on demand for the piece, how much of it we already have in stock, and how much we'd have to spend to make it re-sellable.

Typically we'll give you a quote on what we'd pay, along with recommendations on how you could get more by selling to an individual through eBay, Facebook, and similar, and the best ways to do that. If you'd rather not do that legwork, we still offer more than 90% of stores and pawn shops out there. On the other half of pre-owned jewelry, we do buy it and pay more than 90% of others, especially with antique fine jewelry in good condition that doesn't need major restoration.

Do you buy gold, silver, or diamonds?

Yes. We especially want to buy old or broken gold jewelry, and we pay higher than any store we know of in East TN. When buying scrap gold, we turn it straight to cash and don't have to worry about restoration or waiting to sell it from the showcase.

Do you take trade-ins?

Yes, at least the majority of the time. Specifically on pieces made of gold or platinum, or with diamonds or other genuine gemstones. We cannot offer much in trade for sterling silver or costume jewelry.

Inventory

Do you carry more in your shop than is listed on the website?

Yes, lots more. You can contact us with photos of anything, and if we don't have it, we can make it.
